theater and film

Last week a got a good dose of films with subtitles. On Thursday my co-workers and I went out to see Pan's Labriynth, which was so devestatingly good but suprisingly violent (be warned). Later that night my mother, Mollie and I went to the International Women's Film Festival at Market Arcade and saw Los Cabas de la Luna. Afterward the director herself gave a Q&A about the film and the Mexican film industry in general, which was really interesting having seen two Mexican made movies in one day.

Over the weekend I hung out with my mother again, this time for dinner and a play at Kavinoky Theater. Later on I finished up some article research at Founding Father's and ended up closing the place at 4am. Fortunately, I was only getting up the next day for brunch with my friends and the endless cup of coffee did me really well.

random endeavors

"You have so many random little endeavors." -MMFS

Very busy with all those random little endeavors. First of all, writing posts for the two different blogs I now contribute to. Secondly, writing a short fiction entry for a historical fiction contest. The best thing to do when you want to be a writer is just keep throwing things out there and see what gets thrown back.

In addition to that I now have a part time job working for a real estate broker. I took the New York State Salesperson course and exam this past week and barring any failing grades am going to start working on weekends. Learning more about real estate was very interesting at the least, but will hopefully become something fun to do on the side.

Also, Happy Birthday Mom!

writer to be

I'm excited to say that I'll soon be writing for Buffalo Rising Online, the online version of a regional magazine. A couple weeks ago I emailed the editor with an article proposal, covering some of the lesser known bars in the city. He accepted it and after a brainstorm meeting at Founding Fathers, I'm putting together a couple articles and should have something posted next week.

BRO, for those not familiar with it, is a magazine and online blog that covers the growth of Buffalo. They cover what's happening in Buffalo on a day to day basis, including the latest in music, arts and cuisine, and spotlight individuals or groups who are making a difference in the community. It also functions as a forum for new ideas and grassroots efforts to improve the quality of life in the city.

the holidays

Had the holiday week off, which was fortunate because I've been overwhelmed with things to do, people to see. I was able to catch up with a lot of old friends who were home (or at least out on the town) during the break. Went to the Buffalo Ball, a glorified Charity Ball for the over 21 crowd, which was basically a high school reunion. Then had a lovely, quiet Christmas with my family and aquired some nice gifts including a Cusinart food processor, new toaster oven, jewelry, art and clothes (my boss also gave me an iRiver mp3 player, so add that to the goods). But the downside to spending a lot of time with the family was that I contracted the nasty stomach flu that had been going around the house and was consequently sick as a dog for three+ days. New Year's Eve became pretty anti-climatic in its wake, since I wasn't well enough to drink or party hard. I had booked dinner for our group of friends at Laughlin's downtown but the resturant was extremely slow and poorly organized for the dinner and they pretty much fucked up our plans to go to the balldrop. All in all, everyone had fun and no one got hurt. But next year, I think I'm going to jet off somewhere exotic instead. = )
